The Second National CPA program about Identity Theft, Consumer Fraud and Brand Protection

The Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) has launched its second national program entitled "Identity Theft, Consumer & Brand Fraud: You are Targeted!" in Cairo, Egypt during the period 15-17 June 2009. As a result of the computerization of personal information and the significant growth internet users in Egypt equaling 10 million users in December 2008, we are witnessing new types of widespread crimes affecting consumers and traders alike, namely identity theft, consumer fraud and brand falsification. The program aims to enhance the awareness of all the relevant parties such as CPA staff, government bodies, industry and media about these new crimes against consumers and the U.S. best practices in addressing them.

The CPA believes that increasing the public and business awareness will unite all the needed efforts to brainstorm and explore more efficient mechanisms to prevent, detect and resolve their proliferation in the Egyptian market

The program consisted of two folds as follows:

  1. A conference where three officials from the U.S. patent and trademark office of U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) have addressed senior level management of all relevant parties stated above about the general aspects of identity theft, consumer and brand fraud mainly their definition, economic, health & safety risks and the U.S. applied measures for enforcement and protecting consumers against these crimes.
  1. A two-day workshop where the U.S. FTC officials have addressed the second line management of the parties stated above along with NGOs representatives. The workshop focused on the technical sides of all the consumer fraud and identity theft related issues such regulations and policies, consumer and business education, international cooperation and preventive and redressing mechanisms.

The CPA recognizes and appreciates the efforts exerted by all parties which have assisted in preparing such a program in Egypt, namely:

o   The U.S. Department of Commerce

o   The American Chamber of Commerce

o   The U.S. Agency for International Development (TPR II & TRAC)
