The Third National Program for the Consumer
Protection Agency against counterfeited Products and promote
consumer awareness of its dangers:
The Consumer
Protection Agency (CPA) has launched its third annual
national program entitled "Counterfeited Products-Are you
ready to buy them & sell your safety?" in Cairo
during the period 8 - 9 June 2010 Where the program comes
within the CPA's endeavors to tackle the excessive increase
of counterfeit products in the Egyptian market and their
negative implications on the
economic, social and health interests of consumers.

The World Consumer Rights Day 2010
On the occasion of the "World Consumer Rights Day", the
Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) has organized on March 15,
2010 an awareness campaign entitled " 2010: Consumer
Protection – A Step Ahead" to enhance the participation of
different governmental organizations, non-governmental and
Media to raise the awareness for consumer rights and
responsibilities within the CPA's strategies and activities.

The Egyptian Consumer Protection
Agency (CPA) has agreed with Cable Network Egypt (CNE)
to refund subscribers due to a breach of contract from the
side of CNE
The CPA received
many complaints that the CNE, the leading TV cable company
in the region, has failed to broadcast the sport channels,
displaying at the time the matches of the
Confederation of
African Football (CAF) to its
subscribers which contradicted with the contract signed in
this regard.
The CPA held a number of meetings with CNE
and agreed that CNE will whether reimburse the subscribers
the dues for their subscription of the sport channel package
or provide them with a three month free renewal for their
basic package. CNE allocated a temporary hotline to handle
these complaints.
That consumer compensation was considered a cornerstone in
the Egyptian and Middle Eastern market place which led to
similar practices from different countries in the region to
call and enforce such consumer redress.
The Egyptian Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) agreed
with Toyota Egypt
to recall 6500 car to fix a transmission defect and to
provide an additional warranty.
The CPA received a number of complaints regarding the
problem of
separation during the speed gears the Multi-mode
transmission of Toyota Corolla
Model 2008 & 2009.
The CPA held a series of discussion
with Toyota Egypt,
Toyoto sole agent in Egypt,
which concluded that Toyota Egypt will recall about 6500
corolla cars ( Model 2008 & 2009) to fix the transmission
defect and the company will bear all the costs and expenses
of this repair.
The estimate cost is about 20 million
Egyptian pounds (3.7 million USD).
Toyota
Egypt
will also make adjustment to the gas pedal as a preventive
measure. A timetable for such recall was delivered to the
CPA for its monitor and follow up.
Upon
CPA's request, Toyota Egypt will provide an additional two
year warranty on the transmission.
This recall practice is considered to
be the first recall in Egypt
and the region in the automobile industry.
The Second National CPA program
about Identity Theft, Consumer Fraud and Brand Protection
The Consumer
Protection Agency (CPA) has launched its second national
program entitled "Identity Theft, Consumer & Brand Fraud:
You are Targeted!" in
Cairo, Egypt
during the period 15-17 June 2009. As a result of the
computerization of personal information and the significant
growth internet users in Egypt equaling
10 million users in December 2008, we are witnessing new
types of widespread crimes affecting consumers and traders
alike, namely identity theft, consumer fraud and brand
falsification. The program aims to enhance the awareness of
all the relevant parties such as CPA staff, government
bodies, industry and media about these new crimes against
consumers and the U.S. best practices in addressing
them. More

The World Consumer Rights Day 2009
The Consumer Protection Agency celebrated on Tuesday 17th
March 2009 The World Consumer Rights Day under the
sponsorship of H.E. Rachid Mohamed Rachid, Minister of Trade
and Industry. Consumer Protection Agency launched on that
day a campaign to raise awareness of the consumers by
identifying the consumer rights and responsibilities,
identifying the work the consumer protection agency does and
the services it provides, identifying the consumer
protection system in Egypt which constitutes of governmental
and non governmental organizations.

MOU with the CPSC
A joint agreement has been signed by the CPA and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. Nancy Nord, CPSC’s Acting Chairman, said she was glad to sign the agreement with the CPA because Egypt is the first Arab and African country to conclude this agreement. The aim of the agreement is to exchange information and mutual technical cooperation to foster consumer protection in Egypt.

The Radio
A radio program was broadcasted last Ramadan on the Youth and Sports Channel. Its episodes included questions on Egyptian consumer rights, Consumer Protection Law, CPA and the consumer duties. Daily rewards were given to the people who were able to answer the questions correctly.

Television Commercials
A TV commercial campaign was made on the Egyptian television and some satellite channels to raise the awareness of the Consumer Protection Law and Agency. Theses campaigns will continue to deliver different awareness messages to all consumers.
Newspapers
Awareness commercials concerning the consumer protection are being continuously published in newspapers along with a simplified interpretation of the Law items and means of filing the consumers’ complaints with the CPA. This comes in addition to distributing awareness flyers with the daily newspapers, and delivering awareness messages to suppliers and traders to enforce the Law and to encourage them not to violate it, in a manner that coordinates the trader-consumer relationship.
Cell Phone Awareness campaign
In cooperation with the CPA and as part of their corporate social responsibility initiative, two mobile service providers are now sending awareness sms’s to all their clients, concerning the correct receipts, the product data, the return and replacement policy. The Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) has launched its first national educational program entitled “Towards Protecting Consumers From Deceptive Advertising” in Cairo, Egypt during the period 10-12 June 2008. The program aims to enhance the awareness of all the relevant parties (CPA staff, government bodies, advertising agencies, business advertisers and the media) about the whole system regulating and investigating the advertising in the USA & UK.
